Jaymie’s 2nd Spirited Away Painting

Here is a breakdown for a still from Spirited Away. It’s a quick, blink-and-you’ll-miss it moment when Chihiro and Haku are discovered at the end of the bridge as he is trying to break her into the bathhouse. When the spell that he has cast upon her is broken and the employees discover there is a human in their midst, he takes her hand and they fly by everyone’s ankles, making the skirts of some employees fly in the wind a la Marilyn Monroe. It is one of my favorite, not really important moments in the movie.

We Built a Computer!

This is the third computer we have built in this house, but the first one only my dad built. Because of the current situation, everyone needed computers, so we figured this would be a good investment. Our budget for this build was around $500 dollars. Our target purposes for this computer would be school work and gaming.

The specs(parts) of this build are:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600af

GPU: AMD Radeon RX 580

Motherboard: ASRock B450M a/c

RAM: 2 x 8 Gb Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB

Power Supply: Corsair CX 450M

Case: Cooler Master N300

I didn’t get very good documentation of the build, but here are the pictures I did get.

Here are the parts, pre-assembly.
Motherboard + CPU and cooler installed. The blue strap is a grounding cord to make sure we didn’t electrocute the parts with leftover static electricity build.
Power Supply Installed.
All parts in! RGB on.
Full build. Nice potato chips.

Ekphrasis – Stanley

In school we did a project where we interpreted a poem through art. Here is the explanation for the song I created.

X Poem: In Memoriam A. H. HY. OBIIT MDCCCXXXIII: 126

By Alfred, Lord Tennyson

Stanza:

And hear at times a sentinel

Who moves about from place to place,

And whispers to the worlds of space,

In the deep night, that all is well.

When reading this stanza, I thought of the sentinel mentioned in the first line as the moon because it moves across the sky “…from place to place/ … In the deep night” (Tennyson 10-12). Using this imagery of the moon moving across the sky, I decided to create a piece that adds layers to represent the moon waxing and rising across the sky. The song starts out with a simple chord and melody pattern and adds a new layer such as guitar or more piano every 8 measures. Eventually these layers are stripped back to just the piano melody and a simple guitar line, representing the waning and setting of the moon. Another part of the stanza that stuck out to me was the phrase, “And whispers to the worlds of space,/ In the deep night, that all is well.” (Tennyson 11-12). I used a simple melody that stays consistent throughout the song to represent the moon’s whisper that “…all is well” (Tennyson 12), using a soothing 3 note walkdown to mimic the three syllables in the phrase “all is well” with sonically pleasing intervals. Beyond the melodic structure of the song, the tempo and tone are very relaxed to represent the calm imagery of the moon moving across the sky at night. Through my use of simple instrumentation, melodic structure, and layering, I was able to recreate in my mind the image of the silent sentinel watching over the world at night, moving across the world and telling everyone that all is well.

Latest Hikes

We have been trying to hit the trail weekly. Shenandoah National Park is still closed and they are not letting people on the Appalachian Trail, so we have been visiting the trails in the state parks (but you have to get there early before the parking lots fill up!). We have especially enjoyed seeing the Shenandoah River from near and afar. Here’s some footage from our most recent hikes: Veach Gap in George Washington National Forest, Sky Meadows State Park, Shenandoah River State Park and the High Knob Fire Tower trail.

I used KdenLive as my editing tool.

Final Blender Animation!

Its been about two weeks since I last posted, and I forgot to share this with you guys.

I added some actual scenery to my model to make it seem more like a composed photo. I got the textures from a website called Poliigon.com.

Another touch that was added was the focus. If you watch carefully, you can see the focus shifting from the coffee to the donut.

Finally, I moved the donut into different frames to make the animation.

Here is the tutorial I used to make this!

WeekThing 013 (Week 3) – “Once Upon Another Time”

Why I made it:

I love the song “Once Upon Another Time” by Sara Bareilles. When listening to it the other day I wondered if I could successfully do a cover using only my voice as background instrumentals. This is the finished product!

How I made it:

Adobe Audition, Adobe Premiere Pro, Tascam Recorder, Sony alpha 5100

WeekThing 012 (Week 3) – Blender Donut and Coffee

This is the next part to my previous post!

Using random number generators and particle effects, I added sprinkles to the donut using only 4 models.

After that, I used a texture to raise little bumps on to the donut to make it look more realistic. I also painted a lighter texture on the middle where the donut is cooked less.

The cup came from a cylinder and using a picture, I scaled down edges to make it slope. The handle was quite difficult.

The saucer came from a circle and was pulled down with editing to make it slope. The glass effects are also textures.

The liquid is its own shape, just copied from the center of the cup. I used lighting modifiers to make it look like coffee.

Finally, the condensation on the glass comes from an online texture.

WeekThing 011 (Week 3) – Guest Post – Face Masks

From the California branch of the Inouyes:

Why we made it: Here are what we’ve been working on this past week — masks! Our friend manages Assisted Living Homes in the Bay Area, so he wanted to make masks for his nurses/staff to wear as added protection on top of their masks. We were happy to help! I haven’t sewed since 8th grade, Emi let us use her machine, and Aya gave me a lesson. It was actually kind of therapeutic to sew these! The apprentice has become the master (last picture). lol.

How we made it:

Here is a link to the pattern we used. We placed a sheet of interfacing in between the two layers of fabric, for extra protection.
